Individuals like celebrate the Yu Lan / Hungry Ghost Festival by burning offerings and presenting food to the wandering spirits on the roadside. However the festival is also celebrated on a community scale.
Communities come together to organise large festivals in the neighbourhood. Temporary bamboo structures are constructed to be stages, altars and halls. Lights are strung up and decorations placed.
